Baked-cure acrylic vs cabinet enamel: which cabinet finish should you choose?

The short answer: for most kitchens, a waterborne alkyd-urethane enamel is the right cabinet finish: it sprays smooth, cures hard and does not yellow. If you want the toughest finish possible, for a busy family kitchen or high-touch doors, choose a baked-cure acrylic coating. Both are far harder than wall paint, which should never go on cabinets.

Option 1: waterborne alkyd-urethane enamel

This is a hybrid: water-based, so it is low-odor and cleans up with water, but with alkyd and urethane resins that level out like an oil paint and cure hard.

Option 2: baked-cure acrylic coating

A coating cured with heat to a harder film than paint can reach by air-drying alone.

Why the prep matters more than the paint

Even the best coating fails on a greasy, unsanded, unprimed door. Both finishes go on over the same prep: degreasing, sanding and a bonding primer. See our step-by-step process.

How to choose

Your quote shows three options (Standard, Premium and Elite) side by side, so you can see the difference in coating and price before you decide. An average Tucson kitchen costs $3,500 to $6,250, and the coating you choose is the main thing that moves you within that range.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most durable finish for painted cabinets?

A baked-cure acrylic coating gives the hardest finish we offer. A waterborne alkyd-urethane cabinet enamel is also very durable and is the right choice for most kitchens.

What is waterborne alkyd-urethane enamel?

A water-based cabinet and trim paint that levels and hardens like an oil paint but cleans up with water, has low odor and does not yellow the way traditional oil paint does.

Is wall paint OK for cabinets?

No. Wall paint stays soft and sticky, marks easily and chips at the edges. Cabinets need an enamel made for doors and trim.

Which sheen is best for cabinets?

Satin or semi-gloss. Both wipe clean. Semi-gloss is a little tougher and shinier; satin hides more of the surface underneath.

Does the finish change the price?

Yes. Every quote has three options, Standard, Premium and Elite, and the coating is the main difference between them.
