Painting oak cabinets: how to hide the grain (or keep it)
The short answer: yes, you can paint oak cabinets so the grain disappears. Oak has deep, open pores that show through paint. Filling those pores before priming gives a smooth, sprayed finish with no texture. Skip the filling and the grain still shows, now in the new color, which some people like.
Why oak is different
Many Tucson homes built from the 1980s through the early 2000s have red or golden oak cabinets. Oak is a great base for paint: it is solid, stable and holds screws well. But it has two quirks:
- Open grain. The pores are deep enough that two coats of enamel will not level them out.
- Tannins. Oak contains tannins that can bleed through water-based paint as yellow-brown spots unless the primer blocks them.
Option 1: fill the grain (smooth finish)
After degreasing and sanding, we apply a grain filler across the doors and frames, let it dry, and sand it flush. The pores are now level with the surface. Then the bonding primer and two coats of cabinet enamel go on, and the result looks like a smooth, factory-painted door.
Choose this if you want a modern, shaker or high-end look, or a dark color, where texture shows the most.
Option 2: keep the grain (textured finish)
Skip the filler and the paint follows the oak’s texture. It still looks clean and painted, with a visible wood pattern. It takes less time and costs less.
Choose this for a farmhouse or rustic look, or a lighter color, where the texture is subtle.
What never changes: the prep
Grain or no grain, painted oak lasts only when it is degreased, scuff-sanded and primed with a stain-blocking bonding primer. That is the step that stops tannin bleed and keeps the finish from chipping. Here is our full cabinet painting process.
What it costs
An average Tucson kitchen costs $3,500 to $6,250 to paint. Oak grain filling moves a job toward the upper part of that range. Your quote lists it on its own line, with three options (Standard, Premium and Elite), so you can decide.

Frequently asked questions
Can you paint oak cabinets so the grain does not show?
Yes. Oak has open pores that show through paint. Filling the grain before priming gives a smooth, modern finish with no visible texture. Without filling, the grain pattern still shows through the paint.
Is it worth filling oak grain before painting?
If you want a smooth, modern or shaker look, yes. If you like a more traditional or farmhouse look with visible texture, you can skip it and save time on the job.
Do painted oak cabinets last?
Yes, when they are degreased, sanded and primed with a bonding primer. Oak's tannins can bleed through some paints, so the right primer matters as much as the topcoat.
Does grain filling cost extra?
It adds labor, so it moves a quote toward the higher end of the range. Your quote shows it as a clear line so you can choose.
How long does it take to paint oak kitchen cabinets?
A typical kitchen takes 4 to 6 working days. Grain filling adds time, because the filler has to dry and be sanded smooth before primer.
